Old School Magaluf Workers Party guru – It’s ‘Rock and Roll’ Scott!!

Ex Magaluf Workers Party main man – It’s ‘Rock and Roll Scott’ aka Scott Maughan

ex magaluf worker

To anyone that has had something to do with Magaluf or was at a Magaluf workers party between the years of 1998-2012 this man will need no introduction,  I will however give a brief intro for the new generation amongst us.

It feels nowadays that workers parties are used by some clubs as nothing more than a political move to try and ensure the demise of another business, that wasn’t always the case though.  A Magaluf workers party used to be eagerly anticipated no matter which venue or event it was, if you worked in Magaluf and could attend,  then that’s where you would be!   Workers awaited the announcement of the next big gathering which would usually come in the form of a flyer, giving 2 weeks notice as to the next event, be it a boat party, Palma, club night, Crusoes BBQ, workers awards, Cala Falco or whatever!   The only problem they had back then was trying to keep it away from the Guardia!

If there was a party being organised or a new event was being launched then it was a pretty safe bet that one man would be connected, if not running it altogether,  Mr Scott Maughan or ‘Rock and Roll Scott’ as he was known to most of us.

Here’s the view from the man himself:

I have been asked by my esteemed colleague Mr. Shane Fisher to do a little write up on how I ended up on this fantastic island called Mallorca.

I guess quite a few of the new workers may not know my name or face and that’s understandable as for the past couple of summers I have been chasing the snow.  There was a time however, when I was on summer number 14 in Magaluf, Mallorca.
So how did this journey begin, where did it take me and is the journey done and dusted?
Well I turned up back in 1998 on my first lads holiday away.  As I am sure you can imagine, I was no different to the 18 year olds you see dotted around the strip every summer.  I guess a few of you may well have seen the odd one of those 18 year olds with the infamous ‘Magaluf cast’ –  You know the one with the splint that runs down the little finger.  That was I!, like an idiot, I had an argument with a phone box and I lost that fight.  I am not proud of my stupidity in those tender years.  So, one shattered hand later and….
After my first 3 days in Magaluf, I would be looking like a submarine in the pool, my right arm being the periscope by day and by night I would have a rather handy beer glove.

At the end of the holiday the offer to stay and work was laid there for me.  So with a broken arm, about 5000 pesetas (£20) I stayed and crashed on the floor of some friends I had met and the rest as they say, is history.
That moment, although shameful and stupid, shaped what I am today, who I am and set the ball rolling on my less than regular journey through life and indeed Mallorca.
From humble beginnings as PR at Crazy Daisy’s (‘Fun Place Go Wild’ haha remember that anyone?) through to Production manager at BCM for their big outdoor shows. All of this was made possible by stepping on many stones along the way. This happened via club manager, events promoter, magazine owner, marketing manager for an energy drink, record label owner through to my penultimate summer as press and promo manager at Mallorca Rocks. Who would have guessed that all this could happen in Mallorca?
It was Mallorca that set me on my career path as a snow sports instructor and a festival organizer working in Andorra and Chile.  Everything happens for a reason.

Over the years, as you old workers will know, I have organized a few events and nights at various venues. I set up the workers boat parties and due to my contacts was fortunate enough to secure DJs who were residents at Space as well as getting my friends from Magaluf on the line up of course. We had some amazing events, sometime the boat was full and there was still 100 people on the pier trying to buy tickets.

Although it cost me an absolute fortune I have to say one of the most surreal and entertaining moments was when the Guardia Civil raided the boat and circled us on jet skis like sharks waiting for the kill. They never did find anything dodgy but it made for one hell of a talking point!
We ran a secret party that also got raided, as if that wasn’t bad enough someone decided to swing on the fountain and topple, this unit of a fountain.  I mean this thing was huge, so it was obviously one of the guys who was friendly with someone at KFC who was swinging on it.

I also used to love the parties that were on in Fusion (Honeys now) we used to have some epic nights in there, great friends, great music, great fun and poppers in the smoke machine! Good times! The best nights by far at that time were Retro with Paul Taylor and Hed Kandi was huge. Despite the night being massive and the guys being famous, they took the time to have a laugh and a chat with us normal folk and we ended up being good friends.

We also had a couple of favourite haunts, Funky Monkeys was frequented as was 42nd Street, we all put our time in there.  Not forgetting the odd night we all got off together and we might get into Pickwicks bar for a bit of Karaoke with all the older folk.
Then we had the Workers Ocsars that were kindly held by Mambos and what a day out that was. All manner of ridiculous awards were given out, stage shows, the awards being presented on bouncy castles, Oscar presenters coming in on quad bikes. They were just amazing days, where nobody was trying to make any cash we were just all trying to have a good time…..and we did!

The Oscars like the boat parties led to me being public enemy number one with the bar owners of Magaluf. Without fail every time we had one, at least 20 people would get fired for not showing up or even worse…. Showing up!
Then we would do daft days out with midnight BBQ’s at Cala Falco or school sports days on Magaluf beach complete with Egg and Spoon races, three legged race etc.  Always out in front of Crusoe’s where there was the workers bar at the time.
If it wasn’t an all day party or a movie day, it might just be the pedalo race round the Lizard Island, no holds barred, anything went, cheating was allowed and encouraged!
Those were up there with some of the most memorable moments in Mallorca for me.
Despite these ridiculous stories (believe me this is not even the tip, of the tip of the iceberg) Mallorca has been great to me, as it has to many of the amazing friends I have met there over the years.
That island has played host to friendships that have been forged by the shared struggles and unbelievable highs that is the life of working a season.
I am fortunate enough to count myself in amongst all of this and I have friendships that will stay that way until the day one of us kicks the bucket.

Me and Scott at the Ibiza Rocks closing party 2010, deep in discussion!

It gives me great pride to see one of my oldest friends, who like myself has gone from the very first run on the ladder to making a life and career for himself on this wonderful island; grabbing the resort by the scruff of the neck and championing the changes, fighting the corner and doing his level best to hopefully keep this resort running so that other 18 year olds can come along and enjoy a season or 14 or more.

So if its your first season, if you are considering a summer in Mallorca there’s every chance you could make a life out of it and enjoy some amazing moments along the way and who knows like Shane Fisher, start to make a difference and help sculpt the future landscape of this amazing island!

As for me, might see you next summer, you never know.

Scott in more familiar surroundings nowadays

For now, you can catch me at the Mallorca Leeds Reunion or if you decide to venture to Arinsal, Andorra to enjoy the snow with us this coming winter.

Special thanks to Scott for taking the time out to write this guest blog for my page, especially this week when he has all the organising of The Mallorca Leeds Reunion to sort out! I’m sure his partner Charlie has it under control (I will give you a mention as Scott never bothered pal!)

To all those heading to Leeds this weekend, have a great one,  as always i’m sure there will be a few stories to tell after the next few days!

Tickets are still available for the reunion and they can be purchased at a discounted rate online through ticket source.
