Magaluf your guilty pleasure

Is Magaluf your guilty pleasure??

Magaluf your guilty pleasure

Is Magaluf your guilty pleasure/dirty little secret??

I’ve been back in the UK for a while over Xmas and new year before heading back to Mallorca next month.  As always it leads to some interesting conversations when people ask ‘what do you do’? or ‘what are you doing now’?

The conversation normally goes something like this:

‘So what do you do?’ they ask.

‘I’m just here for a couple of months before returning to Mallorca.’

‘Really? nice,  why are you going there?’

               ‘I live there’

‘Wow, what do you do?’

‘I’m doing marketing and sales at the moment but have managed bars and clubs for 13 years’

‘Really? where abouts?’

               ‘Magaluf’.

Silence…..usually a bit of a step back as they contemplate putting on a quarantine suit, gather their thoughts with a confused look on their face, trying to work out if the guy stood infront of them wearing a shirt and trousers really just said what they think he did; followed by a reply of:

‘really?? ooohhh i don’t know how you can live/work in a place like that??’

From that reply I automatically know the answer to my next question

‘have you ever been there??’ – I ask

‘No’  will be the reply

How do I know this will be the answer?? because no one is ever surprised or shocked when they have actually visited the resort that I would choose to live there over the UK.

I used to get very defensive in these situations and feel I had to justify my life choices to the woman with a broom stick stuck up her arse whose life ambition is to get one of the rooms at the office with her own desk, not have to make the tea/coffee anymore and get promotions so that her 2 week holiday in the Costa Del Sol can be spent in a slightly better hotel than last year, whilst driving to the airport in a slightly better car from the slightly bigger house – pass me the quarantine suit!

Not anymore, I think I’ve finally reached the point where I’m happy to tell people where I live, what I’ve done and where I’ve been without fear that I might not be ticking the right boxes through the eyes of whoever I was speaking with (major problem I had for years!)

The ones that smile, and ask which bar/club?, or are then intrigued are more often than not those that have recently visited the resort or actually have a reasonable level of intelligence/open mind.

I cannot recall a single person that has actually visited the south west coast of Mallorca having a negative response to my stating that I live there,  why?? because they know what an amazing place it is to visit and potentially live!

So why the stigma? people simply want to listen to the press and from that, forge an opinion without ever trying something for themselves.  This explains (Mr Kyle) why perhaps many businesses and some tourists are not over welcoming when you want to storm clubs/businesses to tell the world how bad the place is!

Not Magaluf!

I know so many people from all different backgrounds, income levels, education that are happy to visit Magaluf and spend many a night/day down there having the time of their lives.   Unfortunately I see some of them only seem to ‘check in’ or ‘tag themselves’ on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram when they are in Palma Nova, Puerto Portals, Palma etc.  strangely though not Magaluf, where they spent 70% of their time.

Are they ashamed????

I hope not,  people need to see through the stigma and reputation and be happy to tell the world they are sat having a cold beer/cocktail/lunch on Magaluf beach looking at the amazing view and great surroundings.

nikki-beach-mallorca

The fact that Nikki Beach has one of it’s famous venues located right on Magaluf beach should tell you something!  I wonder how many of the visitors are happy to ‘check in’ at Nikki Beach but horrified to tell their friends at home they are actually having a great day in Magaluf!

I’m not saying the place is for everyone but please, if you like the place and have a great time when you visit – don’t be ashamed to tell the world!!!

Magaluf does not need to be your dirty little secret nor your guilty pleasure.

Now read my blog on the ‘new Magaluf’  :

It’s Magaluf but not as we know it!
